A Call to
Discernment
"If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does
not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with
the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands
nothing . . . ." ". . . guard what has been entrusted to you,
avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what
is falsely called ‘knowledge’___which some have professed
and thus gone astray from the faith."
1 Timothy 6:3-4a, 20-21
What are we to do? We hear someone
speaking of salvation, we read a book defending theistic evolution, or
we flip through an article on biblical doctrine. This "church" teaches
this, and that one something else. Some of what we take in we like,
and some we don’t. Some of what we ingest makes us feel good, some
makes us uncomfortable. There is such diversity, so many variances in
the teaching of God’s word, how are we to know what is truth from that
which is not?
(Matthew 7:21-23)
We must first understand that it is not
the palatability of a teaching, the eloquence or showmanship of a
speaker or creativity of a writer that determines value and
trustworthiness. We all have a mandate to discern, to examine, those
things taught of His word and through His word, to see if they are
true (Acts 17:11 - ". . . they received the word with great
eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things
were so."). We are inundated today by so many that are
attempting to preach and teach His word, whether through radio,
television and video, print media, the internet, or from the pulpit,
as if anyone and everyone has the authority of the Holy Spirit to do
so (Isaiah 29:13 - "Because this people draw near with their
words, and honor Me with their lip service, but they remove their
hearts far from Me, and their reverence for Me consists of tradition
learned by rote.").
The ‘problem’ of biblical accuracy or
lack there of, does not originate with the teachings of the ungodly,
or the teaching of one without the maturation to do so. It originates
from our lack of discernment and the lack of our ability to judge that
which is righteous and that which is of men; that which is of God, and
that which is of the world (1 John 4:1 - "Beloved, do
not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are
from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.").
This ability to discern comes from the maturing in God’s word,
becoming so familiar with Scripture that those things outside of His
truth are more readily identifiable (Hebrews 5:14 - "But
solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their
senses trained to discern good and evil."). For those
teachings beyond our ability to discern their trustworthiness, we are
to be familiar enough with Scripture to use it in truth seeking
research (Hebrews 4:12 - "For the word of God is living and
active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as
the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able
to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."), able
to then protect ourselves, those we love and those we instruct from
spiritual harm or damage.
Those that are His are called to
encourage and train up disciples of Christ (Matthew 28:19 - "Go
therefore and make disciples of all the nations, . . . .")
via discernment of truth and maturation in His word, through the Holy
Spirit. How else can you or I do the work He has called us to do? How
else can we be the salt and the light for His Gospel and His Truth?
(From the Editor - "Putting
forth a publication such as this is a tremendous responsibility,
holding accurately to Gods word. Hence, I request and encourage you to
hold me accountable in these writings with righteous judgment
(John 7:24 - "Do
not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous
judgment."), and also all
others that you allow to instruct you and yours; whether from secular,
religious or Christian sources.")
